Bangladesh face a huge injury scare ahead of Tuesday’s game against Sri Lanka after Shakib Al Hasan was taken to the hospital for scans. The 32-year-old allrounder sustained the injury during the England game.
“Bangladesh allrounder Shakib Al Hasan suffered a left thigh strain while batting during the ICC Cricket World Cup match against England in Cardiff. He underwent a precautionary scan today in Bristol. We are waiting on a specialist assessment and report,” Thihan Chandramohan, Bangladesh’s physio, said on Monday (June 10).
Bangladesh selector Habibul Bashar said that the chances of Shakib’s participation are 50-50. ”We have sent him for a scan as he had received some pain on his gluts during the game against England,” Bashar said on Monday. “We can know about it in detail after receiving the scan report but at the present it seems his participation is somewhat 50-50.”
The injury to Shakib, if it keeps him out, will be a huge blow considering his form in the ongoing World Cup. Shakib has scored two half-centuries and a century in the tournament so far, and is also leading the bowling attack from the front.
Shakib has been having an injury concern for quite some time, with the latest coming in the tri-nation in Ireland where he had to be rested in the final for sustaining pain in the back.
Bangladesh are keenly looking forward to get back to winning when they take on Sri Lanka at Bristol on Tuesday. They began the tournament with a 21-run win over South Africa but lost the following two matches to New Zealand and England.
